INVESTIGATING LAKE GEORGE, NY WITH A METAL DETECTOR

by DENNIS
(LAKE GEORGE, NY)

One day I went to a local library near Lake George, New York and they had old topo maps of many nearby areas. It was fascinating to see these maps and think about what is there now. One map showed a good sized village on an area that is just woods now with railroad tracks running through it. Well, I investigated and sure enough there is lots of evidence of the village that once flourished there. Lots of old glass jars and bottles. So I poked around for a few hours until it started to rain and I headed back to my car with my metal detector running. I suddenly got a loud beep and the detector indicated a gold coin. And sure enough it was an 1886 gold coin. I have since sold it and don't recall too many of the coin details but it was fun! And profitable! Enjoy and always keep your detector turned on.

Hi Frank a very interesting article! I never thought about metal detecting on land until I ran into your article today. I got into metal detecting when a Marina asked me to recover one of their customers belongings near Rogers Point. Someone had dropped a gorgeous gas cap from their antique mahogany Chris Craft and was very upset. Using an underwater metal detector we found it rather quickly. As expected when it hit the bottom it was instantly covered over with light silt. If you are ever speaking in the area I'd love to attend one of your events. I'm signing up for your newsletter next..
